Cleveland Heights Lee Road Library

Location: Cleveland Heights, OH

About Cleveland Heights Lee Road Library:

The Lee Road library branch is part of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights library system. It is a mecca for both young and old in the community. This library not only serves as a studying and learning area, but also the administrative headquarters.

The Lee Road Library Project

As part of the Cleveland Heights University Heights Library renovation, we collaborated with Lee Road Library Branch to create a redevelopment strategy.

Utilizing the Latest Technology

studioTECHNE is always keeping on trend with the latest technologies and implementing them in projects when relevant. Our strategy included an implementation of new technology that would help patrons find information quickly and improve overall efficiency. We implemented a new Model of Service for the library to simplify the use of library sources. This solution eliminated the use of Service Desks and replaced them with carefully placed and easily identified information kiosks.

We also outfitted librarians with handheld devices. These librarians roam the library, providing direction and assistance for patrons. With these devices, they are able to easily look-up a patron’s request and direct them to the correct location of the item.

Further efficiencies were found by eliminating check-out-desks and providing self-check-out stations throughout the library. Librarians are trained on these technologies and are able to assist patrons when using these stations.

The Impact of Technology

Because of our innovative changes, the library is able to process 40% more requests for assistance in 30% less time. Subsequent to the renovation, the library has received a higher ranking; Lee Road Branch is now ranked in the Top 5 Libraries in the nation for circulation and patron assistance.

Additional Interior Renovations

Not only did we improve the library’s efficiency, but also improve the interior space so patrons could better collaborate and learn. We included a cafe and reading lounge, large and small meeting spaces, classroom space, performing arts space, visual arts space, and a family area with a parent’s center and toy lending library. All of these changes occurred through a dynamic process of community engagement and supported the Director’s Vision to expand the traditional role of a library.
