Heights Knowledge and Innovation Center (HKIC)

Location: Cleveland Heights, OH

About the Heights Knowledge and Innovation Center

The Heights Knowledge and Innovation Center (located in Cleveland Heights, OH), is part of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights library system. CHUH’s vision is to “be a progressive and adaptive center of the community, connecting people to each other, to their neighborhoods, and to the world”.

HKIC Renovation Needs

studioTECHNE | Architects assisted in the development and design of the Cleveland Heights-University Heights Library.  There was a financial and structural commitment involved in the construction of a major library building. The library’s design needed to serve the community for decades to come. The library needed to support the technological and workspace needs of local businesses, nonprofits, and other individuals.

The Problem

Under normal conditions, a new building should be designed based on the needs that might be realized over a period of at least twenty years. In reality, most buildings must serve for a much longer period of time. In order for the building to continue to function effectively, the structure and its layout needed to incorporate numerous elements of flexibility and adaptability.

The application of advanced technologies and new methods to deliver library services are changing daily. These changes impact how teaching and education services are delivered, making it imperative that new structures address the matters of flexibility and adaptability in design and construction.

Heights Knowledge & Innovation Center’s New Design

We fitted the center with an improved computer lab and spacious work stations. We introduced two small meeting and study rooms that would allow users to innovate and create new designs with the projection screens. Heights Knowledge and Innovation Center is now a flexible, 4,000 SF co-working space designed to support local businesses, non-profits and individuals. spaces includes meeting rooms, touchdown work stations, work area and a digital media lab.
